It’s hard to find someone that knows Gerri that doesn’t admire her. Her selfless fighting for all of us, against injustice, violence, ignorance and apathy is a legacy for the ages.
As she and fellow ACTUP veterans age, now is the best time to step forward and support them. They need personal care (and the funds to get it) in order to weather their current fight with dignity.
For the last few years, Gerri's close family and friends have done all we can and now she needs full-time care. While her regular benefits can cover regular expenses, end-of-life care is covered very skimpily, when it is at all.
In place of a list of Gerri's medical maladies here’s a list the good trouble she’s created:
—One of the original five founders of ACTUP
—an early volunteer to GMHC, she was an inspiration to a character in his play “Normal Heart”
—founder of The Pink Panthers the LGBT guardian and vigilante group during the height of the second wave of the gay civil rights struggle of the late 80’s and early 90’s
—among the first founders and employees of Housing Works, with a history of empowering the shelter of people living with HIV for decades.
Let #TeamGerriWells be the latest in a string of good works founded by Gerri.
We will use the funds on ACTUP veterans: for end-of-life care, to offset the visiting cost of friends, to tide folks over while waiting for medicaid benefits to kick in. The existence of such a fund may give folks the courage to face the hard choices that we all must someday make.
We can give Gerri and other aging ACTUP veterans the chance for a quality end of life that so many of us us thought we would never survive to see.
Give all you can. All funds will be channeled to support personal care and critical end-of-life needs for all aging ACTUP veterans.
On behalf of Ann Northrop, Peter Staley, Eric Sawyer and Steve Helmke
