“Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement” Brian Tracy
As a young black man, society would say that the odds are stacked against my success. But I’ve been raised to believe that if I’m dedicated and I work hard, anything is possible.
I am currently a sophomore at Hampton University, with the goal of becoming a dentist. The academic program for my major isn’t easy and I’ve had to really commit to studying and planning for my future. I want to do everything in my power to reach my goals. I believe that one of the best ways to set myself up for success is to gain as much knowledge and experience as I can. My time as a charter member of ‘Black Men, White Coats’ and a support worker for children on the autism spectrum, has taught me a lot. Seeing what I can accomplish when I’m committed inspired me to seek out more opportunities, specifically within my major.
Recently, I found a program that, I believe, will help me gain valuable experience in the field of dentistry. The dental assistant program at Dental Assistant Training Schools (DATS) provides hands on training and classes that will result in a certification as a dental assistant. The program takes place in a dental office so I will not only be taking classes, I will also have opportunities to work with equipment, understand how and why it’s used and see how the offices are run from day-to-day.
I’m interested in enrolling in the program because I would like to have the practical experience and the opportunity to work closely with a dentist who can help me learn more about dentistry and, potentially, provide guidance. My plan is to take these training courses over the summer. Gaining this certification will allow me to work in the dental field as I continue pursuing my degree at Hampton.
As you can imagine, training programs like this can be difficult to afford, especially for a college student. The cost of this program is $3,500, but I believe the knowledge and experience I will gain will be well worth the cost.
I am reaching out to people who have seen me grow, change and begin to make important steps toward my future. It is my hope that you will be willing to help me in achieving my goal.
Thank you,
Amir Thomas
