Last year, when I was first diagnosed with stage 3b rectal cancer, we were terrified. Thanks to your generosity, I was able to use the funds raised to cover essential living expenses — things like groceries, gas, and household bills. That support allowed me to focus on treatment without constantly worrying about how to keep up with the day-to-day needs of my family. I will never forget the kindness shown to me — it carried me through some of the hardest months of my life.

Now I’m facing another big step in this journey: surgery in the new year. The type of surgery I’ll be having is called a colostomy, where part of my colon will be diverted to an opening in my abdomen. This means I’ll have to wear a bag on the outside of my body to collect waste. It’s a life-changing surgery, but it’s necessary to remove the cancer and give me the best chance at healing.

Day-to-day life with a colostomy will be a big adjustment. I’ll need to learn how to care for the stoma, change and empty the bag regularly, and manage the physical and emotional challenges that come with it. Things most people never think about — what I can eat, leaving the house for the day, or even just sleeping comfortably — will now take extra planning and care.

This also means I’ll be out of work again while I recover and adjust. As a mom, that weighs heavily on me. My kids don’t know the details, but they are my biggest motivation to keep going. Bryan has been by my side every step of the way, but I know this journey takes a toll on him too as he helps hold everything together at home.

I’m humbly asking for help once again. Any donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward groceries, bills, gas, and the everyday essentials we’ll need to get through recovery. Even sharing my story makes a huge difference.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for walking with me through this battle. Your love, prayers, and kindness mean more than I can ever express.

With love and gratitude,

Des

My sister-in-law, Desiree, is facing a huge challege in her life. She has recently been diagnosed with Rectal Cancer. She is under the age of 40 with two beautiful children, currently living with my brother-in-law in upstate NY. This journey is going to be long and difficult for Desiree and her family. She will need extra support taking care of the kids and things to keep the house/home stable and moving.
This is why I am starting this Spotfund to help support Desiree and her family during this difficult time. The money you send can and will help support her family by paying medical bills, for food, and daily supplies.
Colonoscopies Saves Lives! No if, Ands or Butts about it!

As Spoken by Desiree:
On February 23rd 2024 following persistent symptoms that simply wouldn't subside, I received the diagnosis of stage 3b rectal cancer after a colonoscopy. Looking back, the signs were there, but the journey to this diagnosis was anything but straightforward.
Despite my concerns, I was initially told it was an internal hemorrhoid. Despite reassurances, I couldn't shake the feeling that something sinister was at play. My doctor’s suggestion was anxiety medication.
After advocating for myself and pushing for further investigation, I was finally referred to a GI specialist. I underwent a colonoscopy that confirmed my suspicions.
In the weeks following my diagnosis, I sought out opinions from various medical professionals in the Albany area. I knew I wanted a second opinion and met a team of doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Westchester.
I will begin treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering. This journey will start with a procedure to move my ovaries out of the way of targeted radiation, a step necessary to minimize the impact of forced menopause. Following this, I will begin chemo/radiation for five weeks. I will receive a break for about 3 weeks before I start IV chemotherapy.

Hi everyone. Just a quick unfortunate update. On 12/6/25 I went for a CT scan to make sure things were stable and I would be cleared to have surgery. Unfortunately the results were not what we had hoped and there is new activity in two lymph nodes that were not there before. With that said, I will be resuming chemotherapy on 12/31/25. This regiment will be a different set of drugs. Folfiri, which lessens the neuropathy and does not have cold sensitivity. However, it can cause thinning or even hair loss and some other strong side effects. I will be doing this for 3 months and as long as things go accordingly, they will reevaluate and then hopefully I will be cleared for surgery.

This is not a result of me waiting to have surgery, it’s just how the biology of the cancer cells live. The reason they can not do the surgery right now is because of the lymph nodes. Should I have surgery now it wouldn’t be curative it would only be palliative. The reason for this is because during recovery the body needs time to heal. If anything were to spread distantly they would not be able to do anything to fix the issue.
While this is not the update I was hoping to make, I am staying positive this will help take the road to stay on curative intent.
