Thanks for taking a look or sharing this!! I'm setting up this fundraiser on behalf of my nephew, Kevin, in order to help while he's recovering from being struck by a vehicle while walking home from work. He's still currently in the hospital but should be discharged in the next day or so. He will then have at least 6 weeks of rehab and is unsure when during that time he'll be able to return to work, due to needing surgery for a leg fracture. He will need transportation to/from therapy along with lost wages since he may not currently qualify for FMLA or STD. Thankfully he has his mom and many others to help care for him as needed, but any amount helps! Hopefully this will aid in his healing during this time.
Below is a message directly from my sister's initial Facebook post. We're all very grateful things turned out the way they did and not much much worse 🙏🏼
"Yesterday evening on Fri 11/4, Kevin was walking across the street at Roosevelt & Lambert in Glen Ellyn and was hit by a car. He had just gotten off work at Walgreens and was headed to Andy’s to get ice cream for himself.
I was sitting at home enjoying a relaxing Friday night, snacking and watching a movie. Kevin called me, which at first I thought he just was going to tell me about after work plans. However, he calmly told me he had been hit by a car, that he rolled 3 times. I don’t have a car or drive so luckily the accident was walkable for me. I left immediately and half-jogged as best I could down the road while I called Brent to meet us and told myself that it was good that Kevin was conscious etc. I was just outside our apartment when I remembered that I had something in the oven, had to go back in to turn the oven off so I didn’t burn the place down!
The sight of the intersection all lit up with lights of the first responder vehicles really freaked me out! How bad was it, you know?!?! Then I started noticing the sirens sounding from all directions. I called Brent at work to tell him to come quickly. I arrived on the scene just waving my arms at them yelling, “My son! MY SON!”
I started bawling as they let me approach and it was hard to listen but they said Kevin was talking and had some abrasions and was complaining of leg pain. They let me ride in the front of the ambulance (not in the back with Kevin because of COVID). We then left for Good Samaritan hospital in Downers Grove.
I met Kevin as they brought him out of the ambulance and was relieved to see that he seemed to have no head or neck trauma! His glasses were on his face unharmed! I watched as the ER doc checked him from head to toe… major abrasions on back of left shoulder, all of left elbow, left ankle too… and definite trauma to the left knee area. X-rays revealed a pretty clean fracture in his leg right above the knee joint… which the orthopedic surgeon said is very common with this type of accident because of that impact point. All other x-rays were clean, no other dislocations or breaks!
His employer has been notified and the manager I spoke to was mortified to find out that when customers were in the store telling them that someone had been hit by a car right out on the corner, it was their Kevin!
Kevin had surgery this morning and it went very well… as I type this he is on his way from the OR to his room. We’ve had several staff assure us that the orthopedist is “the best around”. The surgery had pins & such put in and it’ll be at least 6 weeks of physical therapy.
You might wonder “So what about the driver? What happened? Do you know if they stopped or…?”. I didn’t think to ask such questions at the scene and Kevin can’t recall details after being hit. We don’t even know who called 911 or offered other such help. Kevin says he doesn’t even want to know those things so we haven’t been focusing on that information for now.
Most of you will remember that Kevin is on the autism spectrum and therefore this has already proved to be so challenging for him for reasons of sensory overload, accepting staff in his personal space, getting an IV port put in, trying to express feelings, processing what is being told to him and definite anxiety about things like his pain and the surgery.
Let me just pause for a moment to praise God for protecting my kid from the possible trauma he could have endured! I mean, who gets hit by a car and comes out of it without a scratch on his head, literally!?!?!
Thank you so much to those of you who read his aunt’s post with request for prayers and contacted me.
We love you 💗
I’m not on Facebook very much at all anymore but will post periodic updates."
