In July of last year, I came home from the store to find my Dog(only child) with a broken left front leg. Like any mother would I rushed him to the hospital. $700 later they wrapped it and told me to make an appointment with my primary. So I did.. Up until that moment I had never seen a dog cry. Not wimpy or whining but cry. Tears were rolling down his face and snot was coming out his nose... and no matter how many times I said tell mommy where it hurt and how can mommy help, he just stared at me with a mixture of pain and confusion on his face. The following Tuesday I took him to his appointment where I was told he had fractured his radius and ulna. $900 later they put a HARD cast on him and told us to return in 8 weeks for a recheck and possible cast removal. After 8 weeks we returned to the vet who told me that it had not started to heal at all and said for $600 she would cut the old hard cast off and put a new one on. When the vet removed it she realized his thumbnail had been cutting into his paw this whole time and left a good-sized gash, for an additional $50 antibiotics to go with the new cast. Return in 4 weeks for a recheck, however, if I start to notice it slipping reach out sooner. After almost 2 weeks it appeared to be doing just that so I made Theodore another appointment. $300 later I was told it had not slipped to come back in 2 weeks. And so we did... At that appointment which is 3 hole months from the very first visit, I was told there was still no progress in the healing process for $350 were going to leave the cast on for an additional four weeks to come back then...We did not... Because he is in worse shape now than when we started I felt it was way past due to seek a second opinion.
SECOND OPINION........
ey took him back to remove the cast and take x-rays, once the cast was removed I received a phone call from the vet, who wanted to let me know the extent of his injuries before she went any further. Whether it was ignorance or negligence as a result he had almost no skin left on his elbow where the cast had rubbed it raw and Theodore had lost a piece of his paw, it was severely infected. They shaved it, soaked it in an antibacterial solution put a splint and wrap on it ($750), and told us to return it in two weeks. Two weeks later $215...Two weeks after that $212. With each visit being more optimistic than the last. On our final visit $212, I was told there was no hope for his leg and that our only options at this point were surgical pins which would cost $ 4000 plus, or amputation which would start at $2000 and go up from there.
