Hi! My name is Madeline Burns and I'm a native New Yorker. Like many of you, I've been shocked by the increase in homeless people in our city. Unfortunately, we are in a homeless crisis, having the highest level of homelessness in NYC since the Great Depression.
What you may not realize is that over 75% of the homeless in NYC are not single men, but are in fact families, the majority of which are led by women fleeing domestic violence.
Women In Need is an incredible organization that is helping these women and children get back on their feet.
Not only are the the largest shelter provider in the city, with 10 shelters across all 5 boroughs, but they also offer drug and alcohol treatment, domestic violence counseling, and job placement assistance.
