Yes, that's me in the Ben and Jerry's jersey!

It's been a while since I took on a major life challenge.  A few months ago my longtime friend and professional colleague Olaf Kula told me he was hand cycling from Arlington to Gettysburg.  I knew Olaf was a keen cyclist, but had no idea he had to convert to hand cycling due to an illness that took all sensation away from the lower half of his body.  As an avid cyclist myself I agreed to join him on the first leg, around 100 km to Frederick.  Riding along with a large group of disabled foot, hand, prosthesis and other driven cyclists was immensely inspiring, and reminded me how disabilities are just one more life challenge.  Olaf told me he had planned an exhibition across southern Africa for disabled cyclists and to fundraise for local groups supporting people with disabilities - and I knew I had to be in.   So May-June 2023 I'll be covering over 2000 miles in less than 2 months (my average miles cycling in a year) with a great crew, helping keep our inspiring hand cyclists going on the steeper bits...and struggling to keep up with them on the descents!

I hope that you will help support this cause...the more money we raise, the more we can provide in grants to support great southern African institutions working to help people with disabilities surmount their life challenges, and realize their vast potential.

Well, we did it!  On 19 June we rode into Maputo and came to the Indian Ocean, completing our cross Africa adventure. The last days in Eswatini and Mozambique were filled with both challenges (cycling) and rewards (more connections with great people and organizations). In both countries we met with both disabled persons’ and cyclists’ groups. In both, as with everywhere, we found incredible friendship, generosity and inspiration.

there is much more detail about our experience provided in the Bidii Yetu Instagram and Facebook accounts.  What remains with me is the sense of the enormous potential of the local groups we encountered, particularly if they can find ways to work with each other. As we found, the paracyclists need the “able” cyclists, and the able cyclists and others need the learning from sustained work with our colleagues with disabilities. We have helped make some introductions, and I’m hopeful that these seeds will grow. The newer cyclists from botswana and South Africa have much to learn from their more experienced Namibian colleagues. The Swati and Mozambicans don’t even have paracycles in country, but their cyclists and their disabled persons organizations have seen what these can do to open new channels and hope.

I would like to thank all of you for helping support the participation of these local groups in our adventure. I would like to thank my local bike shop, Griffin Cycles of Bethesda, for helping in my purchase of a gravel bike that overcame all challenges. Aside from 2 flats right at the end the bike was perfect!

I hope that all of you can help spread the word of our success in our mission. We are still working on follow up with the local groups, on getting more hand cycles into more SADCC countries, and on growing the inter and intra country ties between disabled persons and cyclist groups that have started to form. If you feel inspired to provide some small additional support, it will aid us in this.

thanks again for your generosity and support!

Dear Funders,

thanks again for all your support!  Today we leave South Africa for the challenging mountains of Eswatini. It’s hard to believe that in less than 1 week we will arrive at the Indian Ocean in Mozambique!  Like namibia and Botswana, South Africa (aside from immigration at the border) has been full of supportive and friendly people. Crowds cheer as we pass through small towns. We also finally were able to ride with Vusi, who so soon after being rendered mostly quadriplegic in a terrible car accident is on the way to becoming a formidable hand cyclist. He gets stronger on the bike every day and is a new inspiration. We have incurred additional costs to support folks like Vusi and our Botswana Council for the Disabled colleagues, so if any of you can see fit to donate again, your funds will help support the groups that support them. Also do keep following our day to day at Bidii Yetu 2023 on Instagram and facebook

Goodbye botswana!  Over 1500km and more than half our journey done. The botswana 11 days were incredibly special because of the company of the team fromBotswana Council for the Disabled, who rode with us the whole time and who had many local leaders and groups welcome us. They also arranged a police escort the whole way unfortunately we already know South Africa will be a different story. See my Instagram and facebook for more

Hello to all Bidii Yetu supporters

we are taking a rest day on the Namibia-Botswana border before beginning the next leg of our adventure tomorrow. the last couple of days have been very flat and very, very quiet in terms of traffic as we head deeper into the Kalahari.  we are now at Zelda Game Lodge about 10km from the border, where the folks are treating us very, very well, helping us rest and prepare for what's going to be even hotter during the day, cooler at night, and even less connected to the Internet than we've been.

we will be meeting a number of folks from the Botswana Council for the Disabled  not only tomorrow, but also along our 11 day route through the country...more para cyclists to join us, and others... we will share more news and photos about this both here and through the Bidii Yetu 2023 Facebook and Instagram.  for now, you can get a preview of what we are expecting through their Facebook posting at https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=botswana%20council%20for%20the%20disabled

we remain very grateful for your support.  please share news of us to any friends and acquaintances who might appreciate what we're doing as you do.

Well we are now 10 days and 660+ kilometers into our journey. A couple more rides in Namibia and then we pass into Botswana and the next leg it has been so inspirational riding with Olaf and Jay. Olaf managed to carry on despite having only 1 gear for several days!  Thanks to wonderful support from Mannie’s Bike Mecca of namibia we now have a new mechanical transmission that seems to be holding together better than its electronic predecessor.

all along the way where received great Friendship and encouragement. This is really highlighting the potential of people with disabilities. Thanks to all of you for your support in making it all possible and for enabling support for local institutions.

fir more regular updates please follow Bidii Yetu 2023 on Instagram or facebook. There will be less connectivity in botswana but will do best to keep in touch.
