For three years, Ohio courts failed to keep us safe. Instead of protecting my children, the system persecuted me with retaliatory actions, smeared my mental health to discredit me, and tried to silence my advocacy and protection of my kids. Court orders ignored medical experts, went unenforced, and caused us lasting harm.
As the children’s father’s abuse and threats escalated, I was forced into emergent protective action on August 8. That morning, carrying my toddler and a suitcase, with my three children and only the clothing on our backs, I left Ohio in a leap of faith.
In California, we finally found protection. On August 13, Alameda County Judge Wiley granted us emergency protective orders and sole custody. For him, it may have been another case—for us, it was a lifeline and shield, a restoration of hope in the judicial system. With the stroke of his pen, he gave us safe haven and a chance at short-term safety.
But that protection is only temporary and on an emergency basis. The danger has not passed—Ohio’s recent punitive orders, spearheaded by the abuser, show the emergency persists. Having dared to seek safe haven, my kids and I now face even greater risk of imminent harm if California does not continue to protect us.
California must exercise its duty to protect, and issue continuing orders to ensure our safety. Without California’s protection, the outcome is unthinkable and catastrophic for my children and I.
We urgently need help with:
- Donations to secure strong legal representation.
- Donations to help the children readjust, as they have left everything behind in Ohio
- Spreading awareness of Ohio’s systemic failures and the importance of California’s protections.
- Speaking out—sharing this story and giving California credit for protecting children and survivors of DV and abuse, so that California continues to stand firm and strong in doing what is right.
Every contribution and every share helps ensure we remain safe and helps spread awareness of our plight. Your voice helps ensure that California stands firm in protecting survivors and children at risk.
