We never expected our trip to turn into a nightmare.
Someone opened our trailer without us knowing, and in a split second, our dogs Cleo and Colt ran out into the road. Before we could react, both of them were hit by a car.
The panic, the fear, the helplessness — we will never forget that moment.
Cleo was shaking and in shock when we found her. Colt… Colt took the worst of it. The image of him lying there injured is something that will stay with us for the rest of our lives.
We rushed both of them to the emergency hospital within minutes. Cleo somehow stabilized — we are so grateful she’s okay.
But Colt’s injuries were devastating.
Colt suffered:
- A frontal sinus fracture (a broken bone in his forehead)
- Severe facial swelling and trauma
- A fractured tooth
- Air trapped under the skin of his face
- Difficulty breathing through his nose from swelling
- Pain that broke our hearts to witness
He had to stay in the ER overnight for pain control, neurological monitoring, and to make sure he didn’t develop brain swelling or internal bleeding. The vets told us he may still need further evaluation and follow-up treatments as he heals. His recovery is not over.
But he survived.
And for us, that means everything.
Then came the reality of the emergency bill…
Saving both dogs cost almost $5,000.
We paid it because there was no way we were going to lose them — but we had to borrow money from friends and family to do it. Our financial situation is already tight, and this unexpected emergency has set us back more than we can handle on our own.
We’re not asking for anything extra.
We’re simply asking for help recovering from this emergency, paying back those who helped us, and supporting Colt as he continues to heal.
If you’ve ever loved a dog, you know they’re not “just pets.”
