I’m still in shock and don’t know how to say this - our baby has cancer. She has a tumor on her leg that has gotten really large really quick. In the last couple weeks we have seen 3 different veterinarians, including an oncologist at MedVet. At first we thought amputation was the worst case scenario she was facing. We got a second opinion, where they ran bloodwork, did full body x rays, and a fine needle aspiration. The results came back mast cell tumor and we were referred to the oncologist. They did an ultrasound and a biopsy so we could have the tumor staged and know her prognosis and whether or not amputating her leg would make sense. The day after the biopsy the bandage they put on had to be changed. In one of the worst moments of my life the back of her tumor could not be separated from the bandage (despite soaking repeatedly with warm towels) and the majority of it came off in my hands. We had to rush her back to the ER where they kept her overnight and gave her pain medicine. We were told amputation is her only option, and she would need 8 months of chemotherapy afterwards. We never even got to get the test results because after that happened to her tumor we no longer had any alternative options. We didn't think it was fair to make her go through all the pain, confusion, and chemotherapy when the vet said based on its spread to her lymph node above her leg, amputating would likely only give her another 6 months. We reached out to our mobile vet and Monday we hear back if they are able to come Thursday. Otherwise, the mobile vet will arrive this Tuesday morning to put our baby to sleep. To say we are heartbroken, in shock, and devastated are all understatements. As a result of her emergency care and now palliative care, we’ve spent our savings and maxed our care credit card out. If she makes it until Thursday, we will have to get her pain patch changed at the vet and will need to get her more oral medications as well. If anyone is able to donate even just $1 it would mean the world to us during this extremely difficult time. We never would ask like this, but we just want to make sure she has everything she needs and no longer have an advance form of payment for when Hallie or Cordelia (our other two senior dogs) need care in the future.
