Roosevelt W. “Clean Clean” Chea — beloved father, storyteller, and master craftsman — passed away on April 16, 2026. Born in Bana, Sinoe County, Liberia on August 15, 1939, Roosevelt was the son of Paramount Chief Bestman Chea and Jowlie Swen. From a young age he was a rascal with a heart of gold, entertaining everyone with fanciful, intriguing stories of village life that revealed his warmth, humor, and deep love of family.
Roosevelt was the second youngest of seven children (from oldest to youngest: Richard, Nancy, Harrison, Toby, Amos, Roosevelt, and David). In 1976, thanks to the sponsorship of his brother Amos and sister-in-law Joan Chea, he moved to the United States. He built a life here through hard work and skill — becoming well known across California for his expertise in construction and his masterful operation of complex machinery. He was a proud Liberian, Kru man and father to the Liberian communities in California and nationwide. Last, but not least, he was also the proud father of four children and was cared for lovingly by his second eldest son Wiehma until his passing.
We are asking for help to give Roosevelt the farewell he deserves — a send-off that honors his life, his stories, and the love he gave to family and community.
