These words are difficult to write, but this is a time when I need to put ego and reputation aside and ask for your help. Straight to the point, my father was being taken advantage of by people pretending to be investors.

Back this spring, my father began receiving calls and texts eventually convincing him to make a large investment. He did so by using a credit card and a home line of credit. Dad was expecting a big return on investment, but it never came. For months, the investors claimed they were ready to send a return, but he would need to pay for various fees and expenses which need to be paid in gift cards.  For months my dad would visit several stores in a day to buy a few gift cards at a time.  When he had accumulated the right amount in gift cards he would message the investors the codes from the back of the gift cards, a day or so later the investors would give some sort of excuse why money could not be sent and the vicious routine would start all over again. Dad didn’t understand that people he was doing business with were running a ponzee scam from countries located thousands of miles away from Simpsonville.

After his death we learned that dad had stopped paying the bills, and he let his life insurance lapse. Most of December was spent trying to pay utilities, taxes, dentists, car insurance, life insurance and the funeral. While everyone in the family has helped with various bills and expenses, it needs to be acknowledged that Lauren, my sister, has carried most of the financial burden.

January 2, we opened a letter from an attorney stating that the bank was foreclosing on mom’s house. Thankfully, the bank has set a date of January 16th for us to pay the late fees and payments missed, and then resume paying on the line of credit as before.

We have set up this fund in hopes of raising $15,000 to help with the line of credit and funeral costs. That’s an embarrassing amount of money to ask for, and it’s not something I would probably ever do for myself, but understand I am doing this for my mother. Please know that any amount is appreciated.  If we received a few dollars from enough people it would make a big difference.

The irony of explaining how my father was scammed out of thousands of dollars and immediately asking you to give online, is not lost on me. I have done my best to find a giving platform that would be safe for you and for us. If you have questions or concerns, or if you’re reluctant to give online, please message or call Lauren or myself.  We will be glad to send you one of our mailing addresses.

Thank you for all the love and support we have received this past month.  We value your friendship and welcome your prayers.

Hello friends. We wanted to reach out with a quick update. We want to be transparent with you all since you have helped us so much.
As mentioned before your generosity has allowed us to catch our breath and catch up on many items.
We have secured a bankruptcy attorney and likely will turn Dad’s car over to the title loan company as the interest rate is more than the value of the car.   The IRS is on hold and a work in progress. The first “regular”payment on the HELOC is February.
To answer a few questions that have been asked.
1). We do not know who baited Dad into this scam.   My Dad was very smart and normally would have not fallen for this.   But remember he was 83 years old and technology is very advanced now and he was sick with the heart-lung issue.   We feel sure some oxygen deprivation was the source of some poor decisions. We do know the “baiter”was someone who gained his trust  or who already had his trust.
2) He did make an initial investment in the beginning of 2025 with his “buddy” (who had already received a large payout)and got a small return.   He did make me aware of this and I  told him great and put it in the bank.   Well he did not stop and Didn’t mention Anything further to me.
3) In the beginning he was issued large return checks from a fraudulent accounts. Probably with info from someone else being scammed.  This started a chain of closed bank accounts and huge credit card advances and also the HELOC advance.
4) the scam seemed to change towards the last months and started with him sending gift cards to a What’s app phone number in South Africa.   He was spending a huge amount of time driving everywhere to secure thousands of dollars in gift cards.  Looking back and knowing now what i know the stress of all this was really taking a toll on him.   I do think this situation expedited his death.
5)He thought he was going to receive $1,000,000 for sending thousands of dollars in gift cards for taxes. Receiving this money would justify his cancelling life insurance, homeowners insurance and taking out loans everywhere.
6)we do believe in the last months of his life he started pushing back and wanting his money.   Police believe the fraudsters started threatening us (his family) to stay in the scam.

Since this has happened many have reached out to me with their own stories.    It is truly scary and horrifying that so many people have lost everything to this evil.
Please be careful.   If someone wants gift cards to pay for something DON’T do it!   If someone wants you to download an app to talk to them. DON’T!
There’s no free money!   Don’t fall for “if you pay the taxes I can send you lots of Money!”
If you are unsure: call your kids, call your banker,  call me or someone you trust.

We will never recover the money Dad sent and making monthly payments on loans for things my Dad was lied to about is hard.

I miss my Dad tremendously.   Many times since December 4th I have thought I need to call Dad and ask how to get out of this terrible situation.
This has been so, so hard.  I lost the smartest man I have ever known but grieving has been set aside to take care of just about every financial problem you can think of.

We still have alot to navigate through.   Keeping mom in her home and making sure she is okay is our top priority.

Thank you all for your help!   We simply cannot adequately convey what your support has meant to us.  I do not know what we would do without your help!

We thank the Lord for each of you!

Lauren

Dear Friends and Family,

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your generosity, kindness, and support during one of the most difficult times of my life. Your help saved my home, and I will never forget what you have done for me.

Your help restored my hope and reminded me that I am not alone. I am deeply grateful to each and every one of you.

I wish I could hug and thank each of you personally.

I would ask you to continue to pray for us as we still have so much  more to work through.
These scammers are evil but very smart and savvy.   Please be careful do not fall for these criminal’s tactics.

Bless you all.

With sincere thanks and love,

Pat

I have wonderful news to share. Thanks to your incredible support through Spotfund, as well as donations received by mail and in person, we have officially exceeded our goal by raising approximately $22,000.

Your generosity will allow us to fully pay off the funeral loan and, most importantly, cover the fines and past due payments on the home equity line (HELOC). We are officially out of foreclosure.

We plan to keep the Spotfund page active for the time being. Any additional contributions from this point forward will go directly toward managing Mom’s monthly HELOC payments.

I’ll close with the words of Clarence Odbody from It’s a Wonderful Life: "Remember, no man is a failure who has friends." Thank you for being such wonderful friends to me and my family.

Today, I'm thrilled to announce a special opportunity. Some  incredible friends have pledged to match all donations made now through Friday at 8 am (EST), up to $1,000. This means that your contribution can go twice as far in helping us reach our goal. If you've been considering making a donation, there couldn't be a better time to act.

For those who have already donated, thank you again. You've already made a big difference, and I'm asking you to consider one more step: please share our story with your friends and community.
