My boyfriend co owns a house with his sibiling. He is the primary owner as he actually paid for about 80% of the house. His mother paid the other 20%, she is now deceased.
Because we were living out of town when his mother passed, he decided to let his sibiling live in the house for the 2 years we had left on our lease. With the agreement they would pay all of their utilities & the yearly taxes (around $1000) in lieu of rent payments.
In April we received a call informing us the sibiling was in a bad place mentally & that the house was in bad shape. They asked us to move back so they could move out.
We agreed & came back only to discover the utilities hasn't been paid in a year & had been turned off for (now) 4 months. They SOMEHOW racked up an over $3000 electric bill and a $500 gas bill & have yet to pay the taxes at all.
We managed to get the gas turned on & have the back taxes on a payment plan. But the electric can't be turned on until the sibilings bill is paid.
As you can imagine they aren't interested in paying the bill & have left us to figure it out after having moved back in. We can't go back where we were, it's already been rented.
Moving back to town ate up our savings. We can't afford to move and we really can't afford a 3k light bill. My 3 kids are with their dad for the summer so I have 2ish months to get this figured out & fixed.
I work part time & am a student. All of my boyfriends checks are going to food, the bills we do have, & gas for us to get to work & classes. We literally have no idea what to do at this point.
We can't get the utility assignments for 3 reasons
1. The bill isn't in our name so we can't apply for help with it
2. They're out of funding for new applications
3. Even if we could apply the wait list is 5 months out
We honestly just really need some help. I will upload pictures of the bills tomorrow after work.
