In June of 2022 I read about an animal cruelty case that included over 50 animals. Many of them large animals that the SPCA was not equipped to take. They asked the community for help placing these animals in foster homes to bring them back to health. I was contacted and was eager to help. I took two horses that were in awful shape. Starved, covered in rain rot and skin irritation from lice. Neither horse had their hooves trimmed in some time. Both animals hooves were overgrown and they were not walking properly due to hooves that had not been cared for. The two horses ate and drank nonstop for weeks to catch up. They began to feel more energized as time went on. We had an awful scare a few months in, one of the horses choked badly and ended up in the hospital for a few days. She developed pneumonia. After about six weeks of medicine and small, very soft meals 6-7 times a day, she started to feel better. She has gone back to eating hay after a few months of careful and closely monitored transitioning.
Then I recieved a phone call about a donkey that was from the same cruelty case. She was very timid and would not let anyone near her. She was unable to be groomed, fly sprayed, pet, touched essentially at all. She was not progressing and needed extra help. She came to our farm. She was very scared. She ran from everyone. She did not trust us or the animals that were here. After about six weeks, she finally let me approach her. Slowly over the next few months, we were able to gain some trust. It took a lot of handling and a lot of patience. A lot. She has thrived so much since. She adores our donkey and follows her around from paddock to paddock. It's as if she looks up to her on how to behave and where to go. We are now able to halter her and love on her. She is still a work in progress. But she has come so far.
All of these three animals have thrived beyond belief. They have learned to trust and realize they will not be hurt or starved anymore. They are allowing their personalities to bloom. They are content. Completely content, finally. They have been through a really rough few years. I just want to keep them safe. And together. They have bonded. Please help me keep them in an environment that they trust. We are working on becoming a rescue shortly after the new year. It takes time for the process.
