The past 2 years have been very difficult. It started with taking on the responcibility as a kinship caregiver for my nephew when his parents failed him. He was 9 months old at the time and I thought it was the scariest thing possible. I unfortunatley was wrong. after having him for almost a years, loving him and watching him grow, I began the process for adoption and being his forever home. I noticed something though. His pupils weren't dialating right, his eyes weren't the same color, he was clumsy, and uncordinated. I began to worry and took him in to see the dr. She said not to worry and that it probably was nothing but referred me to a specialist 2.5 hrs away. This specialist advised that he infact does have cancer. A hereditary form known as Bi-lateral retnoblastoma. He then referred us to another specialist, the one that would be able to get a more indepth at the extent of the tumors in both eyes and determine the next course of treatment. We also met with a neuro oncologist for plans on chemo. While on chemo he is not able to go to daycare due to the lowered immune system. We are now 7 months into this battle with a life long cancer with frequent trips 3 hours away to his doctors, the need to drop everything at the sign of a fevor and head to the nearest hospital and trying to find childcare all taking hits on my hours at work and taking more out on my bills. I am at risk now of loosing my job due to missing such a high number of hours and worry I won't be able to give him the care he deserves. I currently live at my place of work and losing my job will leave me with out a residance so I am also in the process of getting a home to provide him with a stable living situation, but this will also raise my cost of living greatly. I appretaite you taking the time to read my story and any thing you can offer, will be met with so much gratitude.
