Hi everyone,

The invasion of Ukraine hit close to home as my closest friend is Ukrainian by birth.  When presented with the opportunity to join forces with a team who was working to support this crisis, I could not pass it up.  Our plan is simple: deliver life saving water filters and medical supplies to the border of Ukraine to be ferried throughout the country, and purchase supplies in Poland for the refugees that have fled their homes and are overflowing in the city of Krakow.

By way of an amazing connection, World Hope International (WorldHope.org) has offered a match of up to $50,000 for the money we raise and assist with logistics and anything else so we can get these filters to Ukraine. (See direct link below)

We will meet this call as soon as possible and will depart on May 24, 2022 to take supplies.  I am reaching out to you to support us, see if you could spread the word, and help us bring clean water to these devastated parts of Ukraine. We have already negotiated an extremely discounted rate from the company requested, Sawyer, www.Sawyer.com.  We were asked for single and bucket filtration systems. https://www.sawyer.com/products#0

This is an extremely grass-roots effort.  There are two ways you can donate- 1) make a donation through World Hope International, a Charity Navigator verified and highly rated non-profit; or 2) contribute to this page to specifically support the refugees in Poland.

Once in country, we will deliver the medical supplies and water filters to be ferried into Ukraine.  I will not be going into Ukraine myself.  I will be staying behind in Krakow to purchase supplies needed by the refugees there.  See Q&A below on how we will work this effort.

Earlier events: On April 1, 2022, a friend of mine, Kristina Tanasichuk led an amazing group of volunteers to Poland to deliver thousands of tourniquets, drones and other critical items to the front-lines of Ukraine.  All of these items were specifically requested as “critical” by friends and colleagues of LABUkraine on the front lines.  This mission was so successful that she is repeating it for the water filters.

Kristina is a first generation Ukrainian who was raised in the U.S. extremely engaged in the Ukrainian culture and heritage.  Her “day job" has been supporting America – through working to help and support the homeland security community, which is how I met her.  She founded a number of non-profit organizations to do that: Women in Homeland Security, the Government Technology & Services Coalition, and purchased the media site Homeland Security Today in 2017.  In 2017, her daughter founded the STEM program LABUkraine under the auspices of Women in Homeland Security and went to western Ukraine to build their first computer labs for an all-girls orphanage in Bukova, Ukraine.

When Russia invaded, they pivoted a number of efforts to support Ukraine.

While in Poland, she had the opportunity to buy and send additional supplies, and restocked one of the refugee centers in Krakow with essential hygiene items, and some Easter candy.  They found that prices in Poland are ¼ of what they are here in the US – AND there was no shipping.  We feel like there was a direct impact for the people of Ukraine – both still in-country fighting, and for the refugees in Poland.

While there, the ask changed from tourniquets (although those are still needed) to water filtration.  As you have seen, the Russians have destroyed many cities and villages in Ukraine, destroying infrastructure including water systems.  The remaining people are in dire need of clean water. Additionally, soldiers are drinking unfiltered water from contaminated wells, rivers, and other unclean sources.  They desperately need single filtration systems as well.

Enter World Hope and our next mission.

We will bring the water filters (along with more medical supplies) directly to Poland and have them picked up and taken to the front lines for distribution.  With your help, we can bring $100,000 worth of water filters to the front lines!

FAQs

1. How do we know the supplies are actually getting to those who need it?

We are working directly with a hub in Kyiv that is delivering supplies to both civilian and military populations.  The organization “100% LIFE” is comprised of medical doctors and volunteers who before the war were developing the citizen health records for Ukraine.

2. How do you get the items over so quickly?

We have been incredibly fortunate to have committed volunteers who travel to Poland and carry the items in their luggage.  We bring duffel bags and suitcases filled with supplies, pay the extra luggage costs, and deliver the items ourselves.  Once in Poland we contact 100% LIFE in Kyiv and they come to collect the supplies.  It is extremely dangerous work and Ukrainian volunteers are driving all over the country to deliver these items.  In late March, the driver who was supposed to meet the team was killed in a convoy of aid delivering supplies to the front lines.  Someone quickly took his place.

3. How can we see your work?

For this project we have developed a TIK TOK page @tourniquets4Ukraine and that is also posted at www.HSToday.us.  Additionally we have a Facebook page and are working under the auspices of www.LABUkraine.com, an organization building computer labs in Ukraine since 2017, and founded by my daughter.

4. What do you get out of this?

None of us are paid.  I have paid my own way and donated from personal funds to make this journey happen.  For me, it is once in a lifetime opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives.

Others are involved for various reasons – they see the injustice, they see the attack on innocent people, the attack on democracy.  They are incensed and join our effort to express their disgust tangibly.   You can see one of our volunteers talk about why she joined on Tik Tok and www.HSToday.us.

5. Is my donation tax deductible?

Our matching organization, World Hope International will provide you with a receipt that your donation is tax deductible if you donate through their site. I cannot promise one if you donate directly to this page, but rest assured that 100% of the donations recieved here will be used to support the refugees.

6. Seems like there are a lot of organizations involved – why is that?

This is a grass roots effort that is leveraging every connection possible to maximize our impact.

Hi everyone!

Nadiya, Kristina, and I are back from Poland.  The trip was a huge success!

Providing some highlights and an accounting of how we spent the money.  Be sure to like or follow LABUkraine on FaceBook and see the TikTok video clips on HSToday.us in the Ukraine section for more info and pics/video.

Here are the Highlights:

First, the trip was a MASSIVE SUCCESS!

  • All 3,600 water filters we brought have made it to Ukraine!  Each filter can safely run up to 100,000 gallons through to make it safe to drink.
  • We also brought 4 XL suitcases of medical supplies, much of which was donated directly to us through friends and colleagues.  2 of those were most suitable for a hospital setting and in a last minute happy change of plans were sent through Nadiya’s family members, who met us in Poland, to a hospital near her village in Ukraine where soldiers are being evacuated from the front lines.  The logistical gymnastics of these two suitcases will take some additional time to get to their destination, but we have the benefit of knowing for sure they will get where intended. The other 2 suitcases had lifesaving trauma supplies and accompanied the water filters into Ukraine to be sent to the front line.
  • Over the two full days we were in Krakow, we worked with a local refugee center to purchase supplies for the refugees.  They provided a list of needed items each day. They desperately needed OTC medicine, especially for children, so we cleaned out two pharmacies.  Above the medicine, they needed small sized personal items such as baby shampoo, wipes, soap, adult shampoo, lotion, feminine products, juice boxes for children, trash bags, disposable gloves, etc.
  • We spent all the funds donated here and more of our own spread between Nadiya, Kristina and I.
  • $2,343 on medicine for refugees
  • $1,329 on personal items for refugees
  • Flight, baggage, hotel, transports and COVID tests were all paid for out of pocket by each team member.  My tally was more than $4,500.

Question and Answer:

Why couldn’t we just ship the filters and medical supplies?

As you can imagine, you cannot ship items into Ukraine right now.  Mailed or couriered packages likely will not make it to their destinations; they are often intercepted, repurposed, or stolen.  This is a war zone and normal operations are, well, not normal.

Where did the filters come from?

See previous Q&A for more. World Hope matched donations for this effort and they bought the filters through Sawyer at a negotiated bulk rate.  Special thanks to World Hope who helped so much with the logistics for this effort.  A WH volunteer even drove from Alexandria to Dulles to help with any last-minute hiccups or take any filters back if we couldn’t fit them with the re-pack (explained below).  Fortunately, we did fit them all!

Folks are still donating money to supply more water filters. This is great since World Hope is still matching funds.  Ukrainians will have a need for these filters for the foreseeable future, even after the war ends.  The Ukrainian infrastructure is devastated.  There will be another trip to take more filters.   We do not have the dates yet.

Why 30 bags?

In total, we had 30 checked bags- 10 each person, which was the maximum the airline allowed.  26 with water filters and 4 with medical supplies.  We had to pay for each checked bag, so they were all huge to maximize cost-effectiveness.  My 10 bags were $2,435, which I paid for with help from my very generous parents.  I took a carry-on backpack with my clothes and toiletries.  All 10 bags had medical supplies or water filters.  Like all trips, especially of this nature, this one was not without its hiccups.  We had originally packed 11 bags in clear plastic bags from IKEA.  The airline told us Dulles wouldn’t allow to check plastic bags.  One volunteer driver who helped us get to the airport offered then to go to Walmart and get duffle bags to repack.  (Thank you again!)  Nerve wrecking.  But we pulled it off in time to grab a bite to eat before boarding the flight.

Thank you again to everyone who supported this effort.  I wish I could share the smiles and stories of the refugees, the volunteers, and the Polish people that were shared with us.  Your support made this possible.  I, and they, will be forever grateful.  I will end with a note that I was supremely impressed with the Polish response to this refugee crisis.  I cannot overstate how amazingly this small country is absorbing and caring for millions of Ukrainian refugees.  It was an honor to see and support them.

Hi everyone!! Thank you again for all the support.

We have just checked in at Dulles and made it through security. We were able to fit all 3,600 water filters plus the medical supplies- 30 checked bags total!!

Taking off shortly. Short layover in Amsterdam then on to Poland.

May 16 Update:  First, thank you to each and every one of you who has so generously donated to our efforts.  You all are amazing and making a difference in people's lives!  Thank you.

Second: I am overjoyed to announce that my referenced friend, Nadiya, is coming with us to Poland!!

Third:  Things are moving crazy fast.  We are a little over a week from takeoff.  I wanted to answer a few questions that have rolled in-

- We do not have direct visibility into the World Hope donations, although we saw a big increase after this posting; so again, thanks to all who directed their donations there.

- We had some generous folks donate extra large suitcases for the water filters and medical supplies we will be taking over.  We are flying commercial so we will pay per checked bag and we will stuff those babies full.  Still working some logistics on that end and it depends a bit on how many water filters we end up with.

- Along that line, the medical supplies we have purchased and many being donated have starting rolling in.  Hats off to our friends in Loudoun.

- As a reminder, everything donated to this site will be spent on the refugees while in Krakow. Logistically, it is better to bring the water filters and medical supplies that we can't get there.  Those will go to the border and be ferried across into Ukraine.  We will purchase the personal items needed by the refugees in country, working with local, registered organizations and the Krakow authorities to understand how we can best support with the money we have.

- We will be vlogging while on the trip through Homeland Security (HS) Today.  You can see clips from the last trip this team took already posted there.

Check back for updates as we get closer to the date.  Once we flip over to the vlog, I will try to post the direct link so everyone can see how your donations are making a difference!

Thank you,
Sarah
