On Monday, March 23rd, a house fire quickly upended the lives of roommates and friends Charlie, Asher, Ryan, and Hammad. Also in the home at the time were Charlie's two beloved cats Benji and Mr. Meowington.
The fire started right outside Asher's room, and because of his fast and amazing thinking, he was able to get everyone who was there, out of the home. Charlie was not home at the time and against Asher's best efforts to help them, the cats were trapped inside because it was so quickly overtaken by the flames. Thanks to the quick response by the Savannah Fire Department, the fire didn’t spread to any other residences, but their home was a total loss.
In the midst of trying to put the fire out it, the firefighters found Benji and were able to save her, but unfortunately Mr. Meowington did not survive. By some miracle, Benji did not suffer any burns, but she is facing a long road of recovery from the heavy smoke inhalation. She was hospitalized very quickly after being saved from the home, but only time will tell the true extent of internal and neurological damage she could have recieved from being stuck in the home for nearly an hour.
Three of the roomates were able to find some photos and items amongst the rubble, but because the fire started outside Asher's room, he wasn't able to recover anything at all. Now they all have to start from scratch, from buying clothes, food, and furniture to finding a way to afford a new place where they can try to get their lives back to normal.
The donation amount above is a combinations of funds for each roommate as well as funds we hope to put towards Benji's cost of hospitalization and ongoing recovery.
For only one precious life to be lost in such a tragic event is a miracle, and the friends and families of the roomates are so greatful everyone else survived. We will always love and miss Mr. Meowington, and little miss Benji is surrounded by more love and care than ever before.
We understand that times are hard for everyone, if you can't make a donation all we ask is that you please share this fundraiser as much as you can.
