My son Mason Gray has been playing soccer since he was 3, he is now 13 and has worked hard to become a strong center defender for his competitive soccer team at the Sierra Surf Soccer Club. Mason trains with his team 4 times a week, 2-3 times a week with a trainer, and has games on the weekends. While soccer takes up a lot of time, Mason has maintained a 4.0; he is in advanced placement classes in all core subjects, as well as a freshman math class as a 7th grader.
In February Mason was chosen to travel to San Diego to try out for the Surf Select National Team. What is Surf Select? Surf Select brings together the most talented players from across all 50 surf soccer clubs in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico to make a team (in each age group) that will play under the Surf banner at the highest level. On April 3rd we found out that Mason was selected for the Surf Select National Team, this means that he will be traveling to London, England on August 7 to compete against some of the best soccer teams in the U14 age group. This will be the biggest moment of his life and can open doors for his future.
As exciting as this is for Mason and myself, this trip is not funded by the club. I am a single mom and soccer is by no means cheap at this point in his life, the monthly fees are outrageous for club soccer, and we travel to Sacramento (130 miles) almost every week so we can compete against teams at our level of play. I know that Mason has the heart, drive, and talent to go far in the sport. Soccer gives him confidence, a voice, knowledge of how to work with different kinds of personalities, strong teamwork, and it shows him that hard work pays off.
This trip will cost anywhere from $7000-$8000 and this doesn’t account for the extra cost while there. I ask everyone to please support Mason in his dreams and help make this happen. All funds collected will be used for his uniforms, stay, food, flights, and fees associated with the tournament in London.
