My name is Michael Bell. For more than three years, I have proudly served as Chef at VFW Post 2422 in Coronado — building food programs, serving our veterans, and giving back to my community. I also proudly serve as the second Associate Member of the Marine Corps League, Coronado Detachment #1468 and the Sgt. Walt Travis Detachment, where I stand shoulder-to-shoulder with my fellow Marines and supporters in service to our nation’s veterans.
Before this, I spent years as a Chef with Marriott until COVID devastated the hospitality industry. Like many, I fell on hard times, but I adapted: in late 2021, I founded Bella Brand Rum Cakes and soon after was invited by Laurie Baccoli-Joyce — the longest-tenured bartender at both VFW Post 2422 and the Little Club in Coronado — who made introductions to the then-Canteen Director. I am indebted to her for opening that door, and blessed every day to be at the Post. That opportunity grew into my full-time role serving veterans and their families.
At the same time, I have lived at 1519 Second Street, Unit D309 in Coronado for over 15 years. That home became my base of family, work, and service. But in 2025, everything changed.
My landlord, backed by property managers, came after me with fraudulent COVID rental arrears — debts already paid in 2021–2022 with state assistance funds. They quadrupled my utilities, imposed charges never owed, and openly targeted long-tenured tenants like me to clear the property. When I offered to pay, they retaliated instead.
What followed was six months of fraud, judicial misconduct, and outright abuse of power. High-profile judges ignored disqualifications, buried filings, punted rulings, and even delayed and backdated a judgment that falsely stated I “did not appear” when in fact I did — under silent protest and formal objection. My rights as a self-represented litigant were trampled, and due process was deliberately denied.
The San Diego Sheriff’s Department then joined in: they executed a writ after the lease expired, whited out my faxed federal stay, wrote their own “denial letter” pretending no stay applied, and on August 20, 2025, arrested me at my own door while both a state-court stay (Aug. 19) and a federal stay were in effect. I was physically assaulted and jailed by five deputies for nothing more than standing in my own home asserting my lawful rights.
Today, I am homeless. I have lost thousands — over $5300 in hotels, a $10,000 bond, my income at the Post, and weeks of work — all while my property of 15 years remains locked inside my home, already listed for rent by the landlord in violation of the law. What I’ve endured is not just an eviction — it is a targeted campaign of fraud and abuse that has stripped me of due process, my livelihood, and my dignity.I am now fighting in federal court to shine a light on this corruption, to hold accountable the attorneys, landlords, judges, and deputies who enabled it, and to reclaim my rights. This story demands media exposure at all levels. I urgently need help to secure housing, safeguard my belongings, and continue the fight until justice is truly served. I am proud to serve veterans and my Coronado community — now I ask my community to stand with me, so I can move out with dignity and ensure this never happens to anyone else again. Thank you friends
