The Alcinda Honwana Scholarship supports young women from Mozambique pursuing graduate degrees in the Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Mozambique. This ‘Full Ride’ scholarship covers two years of tuition fees, room and board, books, study materials and other living costs per student.
Mozambican women continue to face significant challenges in accessing higher education, due to gender inequalities and enduring misconceptions regarding women’s role in society and their performance in the public sphere. This situation is compounded by the absence of financial resources that allow women to easily access higher levels of training.
Created by Mozambican anthropologist, Alcinda Honwana, the scholarship aims to help remedy some of the obstacles that disproportionally affect women. Prof. Alcinda Honwana is passionate about the education of young women and their ability to analyze and theorize the world around them. She launched the scholarship in 2020 using personal funds. She intends to raise funds to grow the scholarship beyond what her personal funds can accommodate.
“This scholarship reflects my recognition of the teachings and support I received as a young female student; support that I now intend to make available to other young women who today share the same dreams of higher education”.
To date, the scholarship has funded 5 scholars. In 2021-2022 Alcinda Honwana was able to fund 2 scholars, who have successfully graduated with Master's degrees in Food Security and Philosophy.
In 2023-2024, with the generous support of friends and family she was able to increase the offering to 3 scholars, one of whom has just graduated with a Master's in Organizational Psychology. The 2 other scholars are expected to conclude their Master's in Marine Biology and Philosophy by December 2024.
We are excited to announce the third cycle of the Scholarship for 2025-2026. We hope that your continuous support will allow as to fund 3 more scholars in this new cohort. A distinguished panel of scholars from our partner universities will support the selection of the finalists in December 2024.
