After spending 23 years wrongfully imprisoned for a crime I didn’t commit, I was finally exonerated last year. Although I was freed, my journey has been far from easy. Just before my release, I endured a brutal attack that left me with broken ribs. Despite undergoing two surgeries, I still need one more to truly heal. This experience has not only tested my body but also my resilience. Living in Melbourne, Florida, I find it difficult to navigate life without reliable transportation to attend medical appointments. The state of Florida acknowledged my wrongful conviction and ruled that I should be compensated six months ago, yet I find myself still waiting for the funds. Meanwhile, I rely on a modest social security payment, which is not enough for everyday needs. I’m fundraising to buy a car so I can regain some independence and focus on healing. Each day is a challenge, but I remain hopeful and grateful for the support that brings me one step closer to rebuilding my life.
