Hello everyone,
Many of you know Nicole—“Coco” to most—as one of the most selfless people. She is constantly going out of her way to support her friends and family. She is so many things to so many people, and anyone who knows her knows she would do anything for those she loves. Now it’s our time to show up for Coco, just like she has always shown up for all of us.
As many of you know, Coco was diagnosed with breast cancer in early March.
Since then, she has completed all of her initial appointments, gathered more information, and now has a clear plan moving forward. Her diagnosis is DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), which is an encapsulated, typically slow-growing, hormone-driven cancer that has not spread. While we are incredibly grateful for these factors, her treatment will still involve a major surgical procedure.
Nicole and her care team have decided on a double mastectomy with immediate reconstructive surgery. This will be a significant operation, expected to last 8–10 hours, followed by an extensive recovery process.
She will be receiving care through UCSF, ensuring she has access to top-tier treatment. However, this also means Nicole, Avery, and her family will need to stay in San Francisco for about a week around the time of her surgery, which is scheduled for June 22nd. While UCSF social workers and insurance are helping with some lodging support, it does not cover all expenses. In addition, Nicole will have ongoing follow-up appointments in both San Francisco and Berkeley.
Recovery will happen in phases. While she may begin returning to some normal activities after 6–8 weeks, full recovery is expected to take at least three months.
Coco is self-employed. While this provides flexibility, it also means that during her recovery, maintaining her normal income will be especially challenging—especially as a single mother.
We are asking for support to help ease the financial burden during this time. Donations will go toward travel costs, lodging not covered by insurance, meals while in San Francisco, and everyday living expenses while Coco is unable to work.
I have also be setting up a meal train for when Coco and Avery return home.
If you’re able, please consider donating, sharing, or supporting in any way you can. Every bit truly helps and is deeply appreciated.
Thank you all for your love and support.
