To our cherished music family,
A few years ago, we shared with you that Calvin was fighting breast cancer. After a period of private struggle, he underwent chemotherapy and a mastectomy, and we were grateful to see him thriving.
It is with heavy hearts that we now share a difficult update. Last Wednesday, Calvin was taken to the ER with jaundice. Subsequent scans have revealed that the cancer has returned.
The toll of the first battle was life-altering, and now we must prepare for another fight. As proud people, we do not seek pity—we seek strength, unity, and the positive energy that our community has always provided. For healing to truly take place, we need to be on the same frequency of love and support.
The practical realities, however, are pressing. Calvin has been the financial head of our household, and my own day job is coming to an end soon. Medical expenses are mounting, daily costs continue, and we are still managing bills from his first treatment.
We are humbly asking for your assistance. Any contribution you can make, no matter the size, will directly support Calvin’s care and our ability to stay in this fight. We are not specifying an amount—only what feels possible for you.
For those who know Calvin, you know his spirit. He will continue to play his drums and perform when he can; that activity is part of his healing and his essence. We ask for your understanding that while he may push hard, the fight is real and demanding.
Thank you for the love you have always shown us. It is that very love that gives us courage.
With gratitude and hope,
Anisha "Mama Moon" Newbill & Calvin Newbill Jr.
