Our sweet, silly, lazy boy, Elf was rushed to the Emergency Vet this morning where we discovered he has a uterine obstruction. He was immediately admitted and is undergoing a procedure to remove this and help relieve him as quickly as possible.
For those who don't know, a urinary obstruction in cats is very likely fatal and if a cat is not treated, they can die within 3 to 6 days from a ruptured bladder or toxins being backed up in the blood from being unable to eliminate them.
Thankfully, this procedure has a 90% success rate and I'm feeling hopeful that we caught it in time.
Elf is just 1 and a half years old. It is VERY rare for a cat this young to have complications like this and because he has so much life ahead of him, of course we are going through with the procedure.
However, this procedure will cost us $3,000 minimum depending on how many days he is hospitalized and what more they find out during the procedure.
Because he is so young, and this is unusual for cats this age, he is susceptible to potentially having a block again and will likely need to be treated long term. If he were to have another obstruction, he would need to have a surgical operation done, costing us thousands more.
This could not have come at a worse time. I was laid off from my fulltime position at the beginning of September and have had a major struggle accruing a new position despite many, many applications, numerous leads, and extensive support from the Minnesota Unemployment dept. and all their resources. Though I am hopeful and confident I will find a position soon, I have no idea how long I will be set back by this vet bill.
So I'm asking for support from the family and friends I know who can help and who know how much I love Elf and my cats in general. I rescued Elf in the wake of my grief, 5 months after we had to unexpectedly put down our cat Shawn at just 7 years old from a spinal blood clot that came out of nowhere.
This was another trauma to add in the wake of the grief of the passing of my Father, only a 1 and a half earlier. My point being, I've had a lot to deal with these past few years and I'm tried of it. I've suffered enough. Our cats Elf and Seela have been my most significant emotional support as of late, through all of this.
I'm asking for donations, of any amount, no matter how small to help with our little buddy. He means the world to us and we want to be able to keep him healthy and well despite what may come next.
No one should have to struggle to keep their fur babies healthy, especially when they are still just babies!
