Help Dwayne Fight Cancer in Texas
Dwayne is facing the toughest battle of his life. On May 4th, 2023, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy to remove his prostate, seminal vesicles, and seminal vesicle tubes. During the surgery, it was found that the cancer had metastasized to his lymph nodes and there was a suspicious spot on his bladder that was removed.
This year, devastatingly, his cancer has returned. The adenocarcinoma of the prostate has metastasized to his bladder. Doctors believe it is most likely also in his lymph nodes and urethra, and they will be treating those areas with targeted radiation. In addition, he is receiving hormone therapy to support his treatment. The medication for the hormone therapy (such as leuprolide acetate, commonly known as Lupron and Apalutamide) has harsh side effects, including cognitive impairment or "brain fog," dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and joint pain, making him unable to work.
Dwayne is a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1991 to 1995 on board the USS Woodrow Wilson (SSN 624) and the USS West Virginia (SSBN 736). He continues his life of service as a US Merchant Mariner and currently serves as captain of the M/V Divine Mercy for Marquette Transportation.
Dwayne will begin radiation therapy in Texas from December 29th to February 18th. During his treatment, he will continue to give back by participating in a case study at MD Anderson in an effort to find better ways to treat cancer in the future. His fiancée, Misty, is not only his partner but also his full-time caretaker. She must be by his side 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout this difficult process, leaving behind family, friends, and the holidays to support him through his grueling treatment.
I have known Dwayne to help every single person he could, and now it is our turn to show him he is worthy and loved. Being away from home comes with many challenges. They will need help with rent, transportation, food, and other daily expenses while in Texas. Your support can make a world of difference, allowing them to focus fully on treatment and recovery without worrying about basic needs.
Every donation, no matter the size, reminds Dwayne and Misty that they are not alone in this fight. Together, we can help them get through this journey with strength, hope, and love.
Thank you for standing with Dwayne and Misty during this critical time.
