In February of 2008, a frightened, but determined 20 year old Amy took temporary custody of her 21 month old nephew. I was unemployed, had very little work history, and no further education than a high school diploma. My friend told me I should apply at the childcare center she was working at, so I went for it. Little did I know, becoming an early childhood education teacher would spark something in me that I didn't know existed.
Working in childcare is not easy. It requires physical, emotional, and mental strength that most wouldn't imagine. It's also incredibly important; 90% of the human brain growth happens before age 5. It keeps growing to about 80% of adult size by age 3 and 90% – nearly full grown – by age 5. Not every family has the luxury of staying home with their child during these important years, so finding a safe space is imperative.
So, why am I telling you all of this? Because I am coming to you for your help in making my dream come true. My dream is to take my 14 years of experience learned in licensed childcare facilities, the hundreds of hours of continued education, and create a safe space of my own. I will turn the unused spaces in my home into a safe, structured, loving environment for children aged 8 weeks to 5 years. I've got the space but it requires some minor renovations and repairs & I will be doing them myself. I have applied for a grant but those take months and unfortunately I am unqualified for a loan. So, again, that's why I am here asking for your help.
My dream has always been to be my own boss. I watched my Dad run his own business for 27 years and envied his freedom and his passion for making his business thrive. He was my biggest inspiration for taking charge of my life and making sure I have a say so in my future. And now, as my only child nears adulthood, it's also my responsibility to continue setting the tone for how I want him to view his future. I want him to know I never gave up, no matter how tough life became; I want him to see my strength and be motivated to create the future he wants.
