Algonac, Michigan was home to the Reid families for many years and is integral to our family history to this day. James H Reid and Margaret Jane (Somerville) Reid (my great great grandparents) were buried in the Oaklawn Cemetery in 1922 & 1944 respectively. A grandchild Baby Boy Witzig (son of John & Hattie Reid Witzig, and great grandchild Margaret Ann Reid (daughter of Charles & Alice Reid) were buried alongside them, along with Ross Reid (son of Charles & Alice Reid). While Ross Reid has a small headstone from 1955, none of the other graves have been marked.
The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise enough money to have a Reid family headstone installed to properly remember and honor our family's resting place. A cement foundation must be laid, and then the granite headstone (48 x 14) will be installed. It has already been designed by Michigan Headstones. The goal is to raise the funds and begin installation by June 2023.
I was fortunate six years ago to visit Algonac with my daughter Carissa Delahunty. Together we researched cemetery records and were able to locate the Reids' graves, though there is nothing but dirt and a bush there now. My hope is to see their names permanently placed so they will never be lost or forgotten.
