I've always imagined the moment I would return my mother's and uncle's ashes to Michigan, where their stories began. It’s a dream mixed with nostalgia and the quiet hope of healing. I picture the small, familiar cemetery surrounded by tall oak trees, the leaves whispering in the breeze, providing a tender resting place filled with family memories.
My heart aches as I think of reconnecting with my son and daughter, whom I haven't seen in three decades. The last memory of my son is him toddling around on unsure feet, and my daughter was just a cooing infant. They've grown into adults, and I yearn to bridge the years that have separated us.
From my home in Juneau, Alaska, the journey sprawls across the country—from Michigan to find closure, then to Florida to find and embrace my son, and finally to Ohio to meet my daughter with hopes that I make it before she gets married like she wished for. The physical distance mirrors the emotional chasm I hope to cross, but the financial strain feels like an insurmountable wall.
Each place holds fragments of my heart. The uncertainty lingers with each passing day, a constant reminder of the pieces I wish to unite. I hold onto the belief that these journeys—to lay family to rest and rebuild connections—are steps toward mending a tapestry of love that time has frayed.
I've calculated the costs over and over looking for a more economic solution. Between the cost of a ferry ride to the main land, then securing a vehicle. I've added in for gas, food, and hotels for me and my wife. And mixed in with my figures is small gifts for my 6 grandchildren whom I will be meeting for the first time.
Please I humbly ask for all to help me make this happen.
