Sylvia is a 83 year old woman with dementia, on hospice, who has just been served Foreclosure papers on a home she’s lived in for almost 30 years in Northern Kentucky.
Sylvia has no place else to go. The foreclosure is being served by Regions Bank because of an unpaid and delinquent equity loan Sylvia took out in 2012 for $25k. Due to her diagnosis of dementia in 2018, she has not paid this loan for the last two years; she literally just forgot about it. Sylvia doesn’t even remember taking out this loan.
Her only daughter and full time caregiver, Danielle, got foreclosure papers sent to the home two weeks ago.
Danielle is a disabled Veteran diagnosed with an illness that has plagued her with chronic pain. Everyday, she takes care of her mother’s every need despite her own pain. She is there 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Anyone who has been in the role of a Carer can understand how daunting this is. Danielle doesn’t even take the time away from her mom to go for a long walk. Her schedule is grueling and her endurance is already maxed out.
Aside from Danielle’s own health problems, she is dealing with the pending and constant grief of taking care of her mom while preparing to lose her forever. She cannot handle the stress of losing her mother’s home, having to find alternative accommodation and managing her own health problems and her mother’s daily needs. This is destroying her.
Now, there are two options that will stop the foreclosure process: 1. Pay the full amount of the loan in the amount of approximately $30k ($28k including fees) or, 2. reinstate the loan for the amount of approximately $7k.
***Danielle isn't just some super needy person who can't manage things. In 2017, Danielle actually notified the Bank to tell them that her mother was ill because of an entirely separate financial obligation that she paid with her own money. Danielle at the time asked the Bank to notify her as Sylvia's legal Power of Attorney, should there be any other issues. The Bank never contacted her. Despite this, the Bank is not admitting any negligence and they are just moving forward with selling the home to get their due on a $25k loan.
**We are working with Legal Aid to explore all options, including bankruptcy. The main goal is to keep Sylvia’s home. At this time, the Bank has given us a deadline of June 15th to respond to the foreclosure.
Please can we get your donation to crowdfund at least the $7k or ideally the $30k so that Danielle and Sylvia can get back on track and they can carry on with handling their situation without the added stress of losing their home and only asset? Sylvia’s income from social security can *just* cover the cost of the monthly loan payment. Danielle cannot afford to take on a personal loan to pay the entire loan off for her mom, and it’s just not right to saddle her with debt to handle after her mother dies.
Danielle is a dear friend of mine. She selflessly helped take care of my own mother in 2017/18 when she was ill and on hospice. Now, she and her own Mom, Sylvia, need some help. And they need it quickly.
