My son is starting his junior year in high school. He has a 3.98 GPA, is a student athlete, involved in community organizations, and works as lifeguard for the city. He is a good kid; even though he barely passed junior high. Since he was 2, he has been fascinated by the ocean, and has dreamed of becoming a marine biologist.
He cares deeply about the environment, preserving ocean habitats, and has a desire to learn everything he can about the mysteries that lay beneath the surface.
But....
I am an English teacher. I didn't know when I became a teacher 20 years ago that I was basically taking a vow of poverty. Even with a master's degree, I make $55,000 a year. My partner got hurt at work 4 years ago and suffered a massive stroke as a result. Needless to say, he can't work and disability is a whole $1,200 a month. Meanwhile rent is $2,000 a month where we get the pleasure of living in a high crime area, 30 mins away from school, in a house that is literally falling apart.
My parents are both gone, and turning to this platform is literally my last hope.
We live in Phoenix, AZ. A land that has no ocean, and as a result, isn't the best place to go to college for marine biology. This go fund me is to hopefully raise enough money to send my son to any of the coastal colleges so he can fulfill his dream. Out of state tuition is insane, and I make too much for him to qualify for Pel Grants, and who's to say they even exist next year.
My life has clearly gone awry, and my dreams never did come true, but he still has a chance. Life is long, and I don't want him to go into a career he hates, and let's face it, we need people like him if our ocean environments are going to survive the ever changing climate. I see stories of people who have money randomly giving some to those of us who don't. So, I decided to take a chance. Can you help?
