"Hey, I'm Imani Rooney from Oakland, California. Growing up, I had to figure out a lot of things on my own, especially when it came to school. My parents struggled with drug addiction, so I had to learn how to apply for school myself and navigate the system.
Now, I want to create an after-school program to help other kids in Oakland who might be going through similar challenges. I want to make sure they have the support they need to succeed in school and beyond.
Here's the plan:
- College Prep: We'll help kids apply to college, even while they're still in high school. We'll guide them through the process, help them find scholarships, and even take them on college tours.
- Career Training: We'll offer training for in-demand careers, like in construction, healthcare, or technology. Kids can earn industry certifications or even get a head start on an associate's degree before they even graduate high school.
- Academic Boost: We'll provide tutoring, homework help, and support for tough subjects to make sure kids are doing well in school.
-
- Interest Assessments: Students would take assessments to identify their interests, skills, and potential career paths.
- Industry Exposure:
- Guest Speakers: Invite professionals from various trades to speak about their careers.
- Field Trips: Organize visits to local businesses and trade schools.
- Job Shadowing: Allow students to shadow professionals in their chosen fields.
- Individualized Plans: Develop personalized learning plans for each student based on their goals and interests.
2. Academic Support:
- Homework Help: Provide a structured environment for students to complete homework and receive assistance from tutors or mentors.
- Credit Recovery: Offer opportunities for students to recover credits in core academic subjects.
- College Prep: Assist students with college applications, financial aid, and scholarship searches.
3. Skills Training:
- Technical Skills:Provide hands-on training in specific trade areas, such as:
- Construction: Carpentry, plumbing, electrical work
- Manufacturing: Welding, machining, robotics
- Healthcare: Nursing, medical assisting, phlebotomy
- IT: Cybersecurity, programming, networking
- Industry Certifications: Prepare students for and help them obtain industry-recognized certifications (e.g., OSHA 10, ServSafe).
4. College & Career Pathways:
- Dual Enrollment: Partner with local community colleges to allow students to earn college credits while still in high school.
- Apprenticeships: Connect students with apprenticeship programs that combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction.
- Job Placement: Assist students with job searches, resume writing, and interview preparation.
5. Support Services:
- Mentorship: Provide students with mentors who can offer guidance and support throughout the program.
- Counseling: Offer counseling services to address academic, social, and emotional challenges.
- Transportation: Provide transportation to and from school, training sites, and job sites.
Key Considerations:
- Flexibility: The program should be flexible enough to accommodate the diverse needs and learning styles of all students.
- Partnerships: Strong partnerships with local businesses, trade schools, and community colleges are essential for the success of the program.
- Funding: Secure adequate funding to support the program's operations, including staff salaries, equipment, and materials.
- Evaluation: Regularly evaluate the program's effectiveness and make adjustments as needed.
Basically, we want to give kids the tools and resources they need to succeed, whether they choose to go to college, a trade school, or straight into the workforce. I believe that every kid in Oakland deserves a chance to reach their full potential, and this program is going to make that happen."
