Mamba and Nadia of Baobab Fare accredit much of their success to Freedom House Detroit. It was the first place that literally welcomed them home, here in Detroit. To give back to Freedom House — Baobab Fare is raising funds to build out the kitchen at Freedom House, which serves about 50 people daily.
FREEDOM HOUSE DETROIT
Freedom House Detroit is Michigan’s only housing and full service provider for people seeking humanitarian protection. Because of its comprehensive and integrated care model, on average, 85% of its clients exit with jobs and move out into independent housing.
Freedom House meets four critical needs of unhoused people seeking humanitarian protection: legal aid, stable housing, mental and medical health care access, and acculturative employment training. In coordination with its partners, Freedom House delivers free and integrated services to its clients, 70% of whom are victims of torture.
FreedomLives provides basic needs and a safe home for clients for up to two years. From FHD’s community house, clients develop plans for housing independence and work on their legal cases. FreedomAids provides a trained legal representative to guide clients through the protection process and petitioning for employment authorization--a critical step to independence and income security. FreedomCares provides medical care and mental health care access to address the traumas of persecution, torture, and loss. FreedomWorks connects clients to a variety of service providers and businesses to deliver acculturative pre-employability training.
