Update: Our dogs kept trying to play with him so we initially had him at our friends house in San Geronimo to keep them separated. Since then we bought a baby gate and have brought him back to our home to Oakland to heal and rest.

Pups Story:
My boyfriend and I went out of town to celebrate my parents’ anniversary for the weekend (they live a little south of the border). We planned to make a quick stop to drop my parents off on our way back up to the states. Upon arrival, we were confronted by this dog crouched by their front door. He would not move and was making growling sounds. After trying to figure out what to do we realized that his back leg looked injured and he was limping. Nearby neighbors said he had been sitting there for days and wouldn't let anyone touch him.

I sat down near him for a couple of hours with water and food, eventually he got curious and started licking me. We then saw that he was limping badly so he was just in pain and probably felt vulnerable. He eventually trusted us enough to lift him into the car and take him to a nearby vet (Dr. Fabian Flores) that spoke english and was recommended to us by locals

The vet said he most likely got hit by a car and after taking a few xrays it was confirmed that he had hip dysplasia and needed immediate care. We were told that after the hip surgery (FOH) and the right post-surgery rehabilitation, his leg could be fully functional again with little to no issues. We also found out that he was malnourished, needed vaccines, and had lyme disease which he will also be taking meds for the next month. Even with all these issues, we were told everything we found was fixable with the proper care and love.

Not having the money necessary on hand but also not knowing what else to do; we paid everything we had on hand and transferred the rest of the cost of his surgery from my credit card. I have brought him back to our home in the states for his rehabilitation and we have both asked for some time off on different shifts in order to be around for his recovery. The total cost of everything including some more post-surgery needs will be well over $3,400.

I am just trying to raise an amount that can just help us make a dent in the overall bill before it is due at the end of this month. My bf and I are both full time college students so while we don’t regret our decision, this has been financially difficult for us to bear.

Dogs in Mexico are seen more as normal livestock than as pets, so we couldn't live with the idea of him being put down, having his leg amputated, or being released back on the streets to continue to be in pain or potentially starve. The vet said he is 1-2 years old, so he is young and should hopefully recover perfectly with proper care. Over a few days we have realized he is the most gentle and sweet-hearted dog. He has been so grateful just to have a shelter and to be fed by people who care about him.

Any help is extremely appreciated; thank you so much! ❤️
