Update: Thank you to everyone that has supported this cause!!

Julien and family would like to send some money to the family of my nephew to help with the costs of flying him home abruptly, keeping him on a 24 hr. suicide watch, and with the live-in rehabilitation program that he will begin this month.

If you would keep sharing, we are hoping to send $1000 or more towards the family of this teen.

Trigger warning: Suicide, train accident, loss of limb

La historia en español sigue por abajo.

Recently, a real-life hero was hurt saving a life. Last week Julien Hidalgo, a senior at Edison High School, came to the aid of a friend who was coping with depression, had been drinking and was intent on taking his own life. As his friend laid on the train tracks, a train began backing up. Julien risked his own life to get his friend off those tracks. Julien, in that moment, embodied the best of us. He was sober, and he acted selflessly. The cost of his selflessness? His leg.

That suicidal boy was my nephew. I’ve cried enough tears for a year in the last week. Luckily, my nephew is back with his parents and seeking the treatment he needs for his illnesses: depression, PTSD, and alcoholism.

When tragedy strikes our community, I have seen time and time again the outpouring of love and support that I hope this story of sacrifice will inspire once again. Julien risked his own life to save my nephew from himself. He had to have his leg amputated as a result of his injuries.

Julian and his family need your help. This is a life sentence of being differently-abled, and a reminder of the loss of hope that so many young people growing up and living through the last couple of years are experiencing. The family is facing huge medical bills due to the amputation and don't have the means to cover the prosthetic leg and physical therapy that will be needed as part of his treatment.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?  Can you spare $50? $100?

Please dig deep. Psychological healing is needed as well as physical.  This is going to be an expensive treatment. Now it is your turn to embody the best this community has to offer. Please share generously and widely to help this hero begin to heal from this tragic accident.
