Outwardly, I'm an 80-year-old man in a wheelchair, but my sense of myself is a bit different. My mind is very similar to the 30-year-old version (aside from the need to wait 30 seconds for a name to surface), and most of the time I am hardly aware that I'm confined to a chair.
My immobility is due to a "benign" brain tumor that I hosted for 20 years before it was removed in two operations. One eye also suffered from the surgery.
My career was mainly in the editing of magazines and books. For several years, I worked at the BBC in London. I immigrated to the U.S. in 1978, and since 1985 have lived in California, first North, now South.
I'm resident in an eldercare community (assisted living) but I've run out of resources and face a housing crisis if I can't come up with funds to cover my living expenses. I spend approximately $6,000/mo. on rent and a few essentials such as Lyft/Uber. Fortunately, I qualify for almost free medical services.
Several old friends have come to my rescue in the past two months, but they aren't in a position to keep me afloat. I must therefore turn to people like the generous donors to Spotfund.
If you decide to contribute, you'll be easing the burdens of a frail elder in the final years of his life. I'll be deeply grateful.
