Hey friends!
On January 7th, 2023, our beloved Eirah - a happy, loving, absolute healer of a dog - recently severely fractured her front right leg. X-rays revealed that the fracture was pathologic (deteriorated, unable-to-heal bone due to an underlying disease) and the break was so severe we were advised to amputate her entire leg. Biopsy of the bone confirmed a diagnosis of osteosarcoma, a cancer considered to be highly aggressive and metastatic (quickly transfers to other parts of the body). We are moving forward with hearts & heads high because Eirah’s x-rays and bloodwork exhibit no signs of metastasis, which is excellent news!
After consulting with our vet and a few other doctors, we learned that conventional treatment for this condition is never really “successful” in healing a dog - chemo is geared towards palliative care and aims to make the dog’s life last a little longer.
Now armed with this info, we have switched Eirah to a completely whole foods, meat-based diet. Following a suggestion from a holistic vet tech friend, we are in contact with an integrative veterinarian who is board certified in oncology. So far we have spent around $5,000 and are fundraising to assist with upcoming, very expensive specialist appointments.
