Come Get in the "Heat of the Moment"
Those of us that know Kerry are aware of the obstacles she has had to overcome with her health, but for those of you that don’t I’ll give you a little insight so you will understand why she is so deserving of all of our support, love and prayers.
In March of 2017, Kerry had knee replacement surgery. The recovery was a tough one but as Kerry promised, she came through it, back to her high energy self.
In July of 2019, Kerry broke a bone in her right ankle. She had a cast and a scooter and kept up with life as best she could. A few weeks later, Kerry was diagnosed with breast cancer. For months, Kerry was in a cast and a walking boot going to chemo and radiation. She was needing a hip replacement but this surgery was put on hold till she cleared cancer. We all watched Kerry ring her cancer bell in Jan 2020 and what a day of rejoicing that was!
Her hip replacement was scheduled for February 2020 but her doctor found she had a broken femur. That bone was reset and the replacement surgery was delayed. Throw in the shutdowns that came with Covid, her hip replacement finally happened in August 2020.
In August of 2022, Kerry was not feeling well and believed it was due to previously having Covid. This continued for months and by the end of December Kerry could not walk. December 29th, 2022 we found out Kerry’s cancer was back. It had metastasized to her breast, lung, spine and brain.
Kerry was in Baylor hospital for two weeks and received radiation twice a day for 10 days. From there she went directly to an acute care clinic for two weeks focusing on gaining strength.
Kerry is now at home. She is once again receiving chemo treatments. Her mother has been staying with her since the diagnosis being the best caregiver and cheerleader Kerry could have along with her sister, Dena. She has gone from a wheelchair, to a walker, to now being able to walk some on her own.
For those of us who know Kerry knows what a struggle it has been for her not being mobile. Kerry so selflessly lives her life as a giver and doing for others! Her heart is full when she serves which is why she has given much of her time volunteering for different organizations. She has helped at Stray Dogs in Gun Barrel City, Meals on Wheels, SPCA and Union Gospel Mission.
Having been a friend of Kerry’s for many years and watching her go through these obstacles has shown me what Kerry truly represents. She is so positive even when her tank is on empty. She carries herself with class, grace and dignity. Kerry has taught me that hope is living with confidence and courage, not fear! Kerry is not letting cancer define her, it’s just REFINING her!
