Hello, my name is Stephanie Walker, and I am reaching out during a profoundly difficult time as my father, John Walker, is currently in hospice care, facing his final days. His health has declined suddenly over the past three months, and I have created this fundraiser to help alleviate some financial burdens as I travel back and forth to be by his side and prepare for his funeral arrangements. Please take a moment to read his story below. Thank you for your support.
Our dad has always been a simple, laid-back, proud, and hardworking man. He served in the Army National Guard for six years and dedicated nearly a decade to law enforcement as a police officer. Most recently, he worked in security until his health took a drastic turn.
In May, he began experiencing severe, uncontrollable headaches that rendered him bedbound. Within weeks, he started losing his memory and eventually became completely non-cognitive. He lost the ability to walk, feed himself, and perform everyday tasks. We sought help from doctors and hospitals, but while some expressed concern over his rapid decline, many attributed it to dementia due to his memory loss.
On August 2nd, we took him to the emergency room again because he was severely dehydrated. This time, a doctor decided to investigate further. After numerous tests, we learned that my dad has cancer that has spread throughout his body and is affecting his brain. Given his fragile condition, chemotherapy is not an option, as it would be too harsh on his body. My family and I have made the heartbreaking decision to prioritize his comfort and not pursue any treatments that would cause further suffering.
Although my father had life insurance, it lapsed when he began losing his memory and could not maintain the payments. I have spent the last month trying to reinstate the policy with Colonial, but they have been unresponsive, stating it could take 30 days to reach a decision. Unfortunately, time is not on our side, as my dad may only have hours or a few more days left with us.
As someone who values privacy and independence, sharing this has been incredibly challenging for me. However, I feel compelled to reach out for support. If you are able to donate to help my family prepare to lay my father to rest, please consider contributing—no amount is too big or small. If you cannot donate, your prayers and positive thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thank you for being there for us during this difficult time.
