Pastoralist Child Foundation (PCF) was founded in 2012 when Sayydah Garrett, a teacher from New Jersey, went on a solo safari to Kenya. She met Samuel Siriria Leadismo who grew up in the village she visited. Samuel educated Sayydah about female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced early marriage - two practices that are highly practiced in his community. He wanted to end these harmful practices and educate his community about the importance of education. He had seen too much suffering of girls and women, and wanted to improve their lives by starting a community based organization. Sayydah offered to help and the two of them co-founded the nonprofit that same day.
PCF provides workshops and community dialogues for youth, adults, and elders, to teach about the harmful effects of FGM and child marriage. FGM and forced early marriage are human rights violations. Girls and women often do not know their rights and succumb to a life of misery, not mention illiteracy and almost no formal education. We have a scholarship program to provide the opportunity to change girls' life outcomes. We need support to send more girls to secondary schools and universities. Boys are automatically expected to continue their education beyond primary school. This is hardly the case for girls.
