Phillip has been wheelchair bound for many years with a rare disease related to ALS. This causes his muscles to slowly weaken over time and makes him wheelchair dependent and bed bound. The biggest concern is the loss of major muscles that control breathing and other basic body functions. However, this has never defeated him and he’s continued to live a full life raising his kids and staying active in his local church. But in November this changed. He was suddenly struck with intense pain in his abdomen. He was rushed to the hospital and found to have appendicitis. This led to emergency surgery, ICU, a tracheostomy to help him breathe, and living in a skilled nursing facility away from his family for 7+ months.

During his time in hospital, the house he rented was sold and his family was forced to move out. It was difficult to find a new place to live while he was in care.

After 7+ months struggling to get strong enough to leave the nursing facility, Phillip is transitioning to a new rented home with nursing care and home health care workers. He is able to help parent his young children and to see them on a daily basis. His wife, Amy, is very happy he is out of the hospital but it is very hard right now.

  • The new rental is twice the cost of the previous house they rented due to the extreme housing crunch
  • The house needs modifications set up for Phillip as he needs wheelchair accessibility and hospital equipment
    • For example - The bedroom he is in has carpeting and this does not work well with the hoist and wheelchair. His wife put down some Pergo but because it is not a house they own, she could not pull up the carpeting. So she put the Pergo on top of the carpeting. This then caused the floor to break up under the hoist and wheelchair. This specific need is being remedied right now but the struggle continues.
  • They have  huge medical expenses from the 7+ months he was in hospital care.
  • While they are granted health care help in the home, they cannot find health care workers due to the shortage of workers
  • Amy, his wife, is taking care of 3 small children as well as trying to help Phillip.  She is also trying to work part time and looking for another part time job. She is on the verge of collapse.

We need help to keep Phillip at home with his family. This family is in danger of losing their father. Phillip would be forced to go back into skilled nursing and the family would lose their home. They just need a little help right now to make it through this difficult transition.

"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." - 2 Cor 16-18

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope you all enjoyed time with family and friends. Thank you all for the support you've shown to me and my family. We are doing well, and we hope the same for you.

We have been managing to get things back to some sense of normal since I've been back from such a long recovery. Many things lapsed or fell into disrepair while I was away. One of which was my wheelchair van.

The van's registration lapsed while I was gone. In the process of getting it re-registered it was required to be emission tested. It failed because of an oxygen sensor that is shorted out. When our mechanic looked at it to see about fixing it we discovered that the wheelchair modifications to the van have covered over where the oxygen sensor is located. It turns a $150.00 repair on an 18 year old van into an estimated $3000.00 repair because of cutting and re-fabricating framework around the sensor.

We are in the process now of trying to get the emissions certificate waived which will allow me to register and drive the van for one year. But to get the waiver, we have to have the emissions test failed 3 times at $37 a pop. Then pay registration on top of that. And that will only be good for one year at which point if I don't repair the van I'll have to jump through the fail X3 test hoops again for another year.

In the meantime I'm unable to travel any meaningful distance from home. The best thing aside from winning the lottery and replacing the van, would be repair the oxygen sensor. The mechanic is a friend who knows my situation and has deeply discounted the repair work already. But a $3000.00 repair bill on top of registration is just not something our family can afford at the moment, but we are trying to work towards that goal.

Any help would be very appreciated, even if it is just sharing this post with your friends. The support you all have shown has been a very REAL blessing to my family and I. Thanks and God bless you.

I made it home yesterday afternoon! I am so happy to be home with family! I thank God for being with me through all of this and for healing me quickly. And thanks to the medical staff at the nursing facility! I made many friends there.

So good to be home. But now I need to work on getting my nurse hours and caregiver hours filled. We need weekend workers to give Amy a break. If you know anyone in my area that is looking for part time work please have them contact me.

Thank you all for your prayers and support. Please share this.

My tracheostomy has finally been removed! It is healing up well and quickly praise God! If all goes well I will be discharged next week. And be headed home! Thank you to everyone who has given support and/or shared my story. It has helped tremendously and has really meant a lot to my family and I.

We are still looking for nurses and caregivers to fill in hours that we have not staffed yet. Especially for weekends. If you know anyone in our area that needs part time work please have them contact us. And thank you again for your support.

Been back in the skilled nursing facility for about a month. Good news is that they are planning to remove my tracheostomy. The transition and healing might be pretty tough, but life at home will be much easier without it. And I know God has me covered and protected.

In the mean time the nurses and caregivers I had have found new clients. So I am still looking for caregivers and nurses to provide home healthcare once I am discharged.

Thank you all for your support. Please share this. God bless you!

3 steps forward, two steps back. Trying to get back into the skilled nursing facility I was in before. The idea is to get the tracheostomy removed so life at home will be simpler. The facility I was in before has a great reputation for being one of the best respiratory health care facilities in the state. The downside is that because of a bureaucratic mixup with Medicaid I still owe a share of cost (at least $7000.00) for the first time I was there. Which makes them lean toward not accepting me back.

While I was there the first time, Medicaid said they would reduce or remove the share of cost for me as long as I provided a mountain of documentation they requested. Assembling that documentation didn't get finished until after I was discharged. When I submitted it to Medicaid (in Arizona it's called ACCCHS) they said great we received it, but since you've been discharged we're not going to help.

I am now in the process of appealing that decision.

It has been quite the juggling act and Amy has been helping handle most of it. But it has been exhausting for both of us.

God knows what we need and I'm trusting Him for the best. Thank you all for the help and support.
