Imagine providing free help to someone raising three kids, has no job, and the family is on food stamps. The child credit means $6,000 in welfare to help the family in an incredible way. To get this money a tax return has to be filed. Now imagine that the family pays a tax preparer $500 for this. That $500 can amount to 1/2 month of rent and utility cost, or more.
We do the return for free and last year we helped over 1,200 people like this.
Tax returns are complex and finding people to help get these done is not easy. Our goal for finding dedicated volunteers for this is falling short of the need we have to do all those tax returns.
