For over 25 years, Marta Dewey has been a guiding light in our community. As the Executive Director of PTYA, she has dedicated her life to teaching and inspiring our children through the magic of musical theater. Now, Marta needs our help. Recently, she fell victim to a sophisticated and heartbreaking scam that has impacted so many hardworking individuals in this country. After identifying what she believed to be an issue with her bank account, Marta did the responsible thing—she called what she thought was her financial institution.
What she didn’t know was that scammers had hijacked the phone number she called and redirected it to themselves. These fraudsters, operating overseas and posing as legitimate representatives, exploited her trust and managed to steal over $7,500 from her account.
These kinds of fraudulent activities are disturbingly common, with millions of Americans falling prey to them every year. The fact that these perpetrators often operate internationally makes it nearly impossible for victims to recover their stolen funds. This isn’t a reflection of carelessness on Marta’s part—it’s a testament to how sophisticated and predatory these scams have become.
Marta has spent decades giving to others, teaching our children, and building a legacy of love and support through her work. It’s heartbreaking to see her face this kind of financial loss without any means of recovery.
